This has been assured by the regional president, Esperanza Aguirre, during the presentation of the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies (IMDEA) that will receive the ten institutions, which will work as of 2007 on the areas set out as priorities in the 4th Regional Plan of Scientific Research and Technological Innovation (Pricit). The work of the institutes - based around the scientific and technological parks of the region - will be on water, energy, social sciences, applied mathematics, materials, free software, nanotechnology, biomedicine and information and communication.

To create this environment of scientific excellence, the regional government will invest 300 million euros to which will be added another 200 million euros for the creation of six major international scientific facilities of international size and quality. Aguirre, who has requested the participation of all of society, regional departments, universities, research centres, companies and scientists in achieving this task, has highlighted that IMDEA has established a trademark image that will identify Madrid as a region that generates knowledge.

Aims:

  • The purpose of IMDEA is to encourage R+D+i activities, develop its own and competitive state-of-the-art science and technology, have international quality research teams and equipment, recruit and train top quality human capital and boost multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • The Community is the first European administration that has adopted the European Charter of the Researcher so as to be able to hire young researchers from the beginning of their career.
  • Therefore, Madrid will have 400 young researchers over the next four years (100 a year) who will be hired right from the beginning of their research career and will be trained in an environment of scientific excellence.
