What is IMDEA

Welcome to the IMDEA´s web page.

A new way of doing Science

IMDEA which in Spanish stands for Instituto Madrileño de Estudios Avanzados or Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies in English is a network of international research centres promoted by the Madrid Regional Government with the goal of turning Madrid into one of the top knowledge generation regions in Europe. This goal will be achieved by:

  • Creating an environment suitable for advanced R&D that is internationally very attractive for the most talented scientist
  • Doing edge science and developing cutting-edge technology that is useful and competitive internationally
  • Creating a critical mass of outstanding researchers and world class scientific equipment that facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Involving industry and the private sector through out the whole R&D process

IMDEA will be a keystone for creating in our region a competitive environment based on generating knowledge. This will contribute to the well-being of Madrid and Spain.

Scientific development requires public and private funding, with a certain balance between them.In Europe, and particularly in Spain, this balance does not exist. Traditionally in Spain there has been plenty of public funding for research in academic institutions but private contributions have been scarce. IMDEA sets a new framework in Madrid which combines public and private support for science steering research towards the demands of people and the market, encouraging the private sector to participate actively in designing science and financing it.

A common framework for the Madrid Community

IMDEA is also the new brand name for our network of specialised independent research centres each one working in different branches of knowledge under the governance of an outstanding board of trustees with representatives from the administrations, academia and industry, capable of producing a chain reaction that will benefit other institutions.

IMDEA gives also greater international visibility to the science and research being carried out in Madrid, consolidating our Region as a hub for good Science and bold technology.
