The main research topics that will be considered as priorities in this Institute have in common the objective of reducing the dependency from fossil fuels, decreasing the environmental impact of the energy, and achieving a more rational use of the energy resources. Those topics can be included in the next lines:

• Renewable energies, with main emphasis in solar energy and biofuels.
• Clean energy technologies: hydrogen as energy carrier, fuel cells, clean combustion, and CO2 capture and sequestration.
• Energy efficiency and distribution: energy efficiency in both residential and industrial sectors, smart energy networks.

These topics are not viewed as a completely closed research programme. The definition of the research lines in the IMDEA Energy Institute must be dynamic along the time, so they can be modified, including new ones or closing other ones, depending on the results being obtained and on the future interest of the corresponding topics. The same criteria will be applied to the participation of researchers in the Institute. Thereby, the results of the different research lines and groups will be evaluated periodically by external commissions.
