IMDEA-Materials will be located in one of the technological parks that have been recently created by universities and the Community of Madrid in such a way that it can benefit from the research infrastructures available and the synergy created by the nearness of other R+D centres. IMDEA-Materials will have its headquarters in Getafe (technological area in the South) in the Scientific and Technological Park of the Polytechnic University of Madrid which has given a plot to this Foundation for the construction of a building of about 6.000 m2 that will house the headquarters of IMDEA-Materials.
This scientific and technological park will also house industrial facilities and test laboratories (aeronautical technological centre, industrial technological centre and technological centre for mineral energy resources and advanced materials) and Airbus's new technological centre for composite materials. IMDEA-Materials will be located in a strategic place for the development of its activities due to its closeness to other R+D centres which will collaborate with IMDEA-Materials in order to strengthen the research lines of the institute even more.
For the construction of the building, approximately 8-10 M€ will be invested and expenditure on scientific equipment will be of the same order which means an investment of about 16-20 M€ to be made in the first four years.
The construction of the building will take about 2-3 years. Thus, a provisional headquarters has been prepared with an area of 400 m2 located in the E.T.S. de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos where IMDEA-Materials will begin its activities until the definitive headquarters is available. The provisional headquarters will have a test laboratory of approximately 135 m2 and capacity for 20 researchers with totally renovated facilities so that researchers will be provided with the necessary means to carry out research of excellence, in accordance to the Institute’s goals.
