The need to promote Institutes of Mathematics with various formats to encourage greater involvement of this subject in the field of R&D-IT, as well as to increase its social impact, is universally recognised. It is for that reason that some years ago, and in certain cases even decades ago, many countries in Europe and North America decided to promote the creation of Institutes of Mathematics specifically orientated towards the most computational and applied aspects. Indeed, Mathematics is increasingly being asked to quantify its answers and make them accessible and useful to the rest of society. This task is possible today thanks to computers, Numerical Analysis and Computation, but it requires a high level of specialisation and development of suitable instruments and laboratories.

In view of the extraordinary economic development of the CM in recent years, and the existence of sufficient critical mass in the academic environment of the Madrid region, we consider that those circumstances now exist which make it not only desirable, but also imperative to create and promote this new Institute of Mathematics of the CM.

  • Its missions and priority objectives would be (see also the attached table):
  • To increase the impact of mathematics by promoting research of an interdisciplinary nature, linking it up with the most important problems in other sciences, industry, and in the R&D – IT network in general.
  • To increase the quality and impact of computational Mathematics in order to make this transfer between Mathematics and the rest of the R&D-IT system possible.
  • To strengthen basic research directly related to the solving of these problems, achieving a genuine transfer of mathematical knowledge.
  • To convert the Community of Madrid into a national and international reference point in mathematical research, both basic and orientated.
  • To use Mathematics in order to contribute to the increase in the wealth and social well-being of the region.

All these objectives may be summarised in very few words: to promote top quality research, particularly in the most computational and applied aspects of mathematics and in its interaction with the R&D-IT environment, thereby raising its national and international profile.

The IMDEA Mathematics can play a complementary role with the Institute of Mathematical Sciences ICMAT (CSIC-UAM-UC3M-UCM), so much structurally and thematicaly; both coordinated initiatives will provide an extraordinary strength to the mathematics in the region, which will allow to turn them into a European discipline model.
