Dr. Andreu Mas-Colell, member of the Board of Directors of IMDEA-Social Sciences, elected Secretary-General of the European Research Council for the period 2009-2011

The European Research Council, an institution recently created in the EU to finance projects with strictly scientific criteria has elected its two first Secretary-Generals.The German Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker will hold the post from January 2007 to July 2009.

He will then be replaced by the Spanish economist Andreu Mas-Colell, who will remain in the post until December 2011.The Scientific Council of the institution requested candidatures for the post and at the end of August reached a consensus on the appointments.The European Commissioner for Science and Research, Janez Potocnik, welcomed the appointments that demonstrate, he said, that the European Commission will give full autonomy to the European Research Council to take its own decisions.

The new independent institution will begin to distribute funds among researchers in 2007.

The region will have ten Institutes for Advanced Studies next year (06/06/2006)
