ITP Aero and IMDEA Materials develop a pioneer R&D program to simulate 3D manufacturing processes

ITP Aero and IMDEA Materials collaborate in an R&D program named ENVIDIA, whose goal is the development of software capable of simulating the production of aeronautic components by additive manufacturing technologies.

The activities in this program began in mid 2018, with the objective of obtaining this technology in 2022. This milestone will make ITP Aero and IMDEA Materials worldwide pioneers, providing a privileged position to both organisations around additive manufacturing processes.

ENVIDA is part of the “Retos Colaboración” (Collaboration Challenges) call of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. The culmination of this project will be the generation of a simulation environment that can be integrated, in the first place, in the R&D activities of ITP Aero, so that in the mid term it can be part of their industrial production chain.

The development of this technology will render a differential competitive advantage when it comes to simulating the manufacturing process final result, and therefore, it will allow to efficiently optimize and reduce development and certification design and cost. At the same time, this strategy will allow IMDEA Materials to extend the progresses obtained in the case of Ni super alloys to other metallic materials.

Erlantz Cristóbal, Technology executive director of ITP Aero, commented: “ENVIDIA is fruit of our bet on collaborating with technological centers and universities, one of the cornerstones of our digitalization and own technology development plans. I have no doubt that the results obtained in ENVIDIA will provide a competitive advantage in a technological area with the relevance of additive manufacturing, consolidating the positioning of ITP Aero as a global technological company leader in its sector”.

In its commitment to digitization, ITP Aero, in addition to simulation, works in the fields of systems integration, cybersecurity, augmented reality, big data, machine learning, automation and robotics.
