Homogenization-based polycrystal plasticity models

February 8, 2013

In this short course the participants will review and compare the available models for polycrystals deforming in the viscoplastic regime. Basic elements, assumptions and range of applicability of the models will be presented. Discussion of hardening and texture evolution associated with several strain paths (rolling, torsion, compression) of different metallic materials, and a hands-on training on how to simulate polycrystal plastic forming using our Visco-Plastic Self-Consistent (VPSC) code will be provided.

Lucía Figar de Lacalle, consejera de Educación de la Comunidad, y Javier Uceda, rector de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, inauguraron la sede provisional de este Centro en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Caminos de la UPM. Estará dedicado a la investigación de la Ciencia e Ingeniería de Materiales y tendrá como objetivo facilitar la transferencia de tecnología al sector industrial.

Allison, professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering of University of Michigan and current member of the Scientific Council of IMDEA Materials Institute, has been elected member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). This is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer, according to an NAE statement.

Multiscale Modelling of nanostructured titanium-based metallic materials

A research team of IMDEA Materials Institute participates in the European project VINAT (FP7-NMP in coordination with Russia) which aims at developing multiscale models for the theoretical analysis, virtual testing and optimization of nanostructured titanium-based metallic materials. The project consortium is formed by 6 European and 5 Russian institutions. The project consortium is formed by 6 European and 5 Russian institutions.

Interview with Juan José Vilatela, Head Researcher of the Multifunctional Nanocomposites group of IMDEA Materials

"I am convinced that the carbon nanotube fibre will revolutionize the composite materials field".

Juan José Vilatela has a BSc in Engineering Physics (Hons) from Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico, and a PhD from Cambridge University, obtained in 2009. Before joining IMDEA Materials Institute he worked as a postdoctoral research associate in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at Cambridge University. His research focused mainly on the development of a new high-performance fibre made of carbon nanotubes. The fibre spinning process is currently under industrial scale-up; Dr. Vilatela being an active consultant in this development.
