R&D agreement with Pennsylvania State University

IMDEA Materials Institute y Pennsylvania State University has signed a two years colaboration agreement to promote joint research and development activities in the areas of processing, charaterization and simulation of advanced materials. In addition, this agreement opens a new range of possibilities to exchange staff researchers and students between both institutions.

Leibniz Prize for Peter Gumbsch, member of the Board of Trustees of IMDEA-Materials, May 16th, 2007

The German Research Foundation (DFG) announced on Thursday that Professor Peter Gumbsch, director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM in Freiburg and Halle, head of the Institute for Reliability of Components and Systems IZBS at the University of Karlsruhe and member of the Board of Trustees of IMDEA-Materials, is to receive the 2007 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize for his outstanding research on the deformation and fracture mechanisms of materials. Worth 2.5 million euros, the Leibniz prize is Germany’s most highly endowed research prize, and also the most prestigious.

Prof. S. Suresh awarded 2007 European Materials Medal

Subra Suresh, Ford Professor of Engineering, former head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT and member of the Board of Trustees of IMDEA-materiales, is the recipient of the 2007 European Materials Medal from the Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS). Suresh is the first scientist based outside Europe to receive the award.

IMDEA-materials has been granted its first European project

The collaborative project MAAXIMUS (More Affordable Aircraft through eXtended, Integrated and Mature nUmerical Sizing) presented to the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union has been granted. IMDEA-materials is one of the research centers in a consortium of 58 partners from 18 countries made up of of aircraft manufacturers, material behaviour specialists, software and computer hardware developers, computational mechanics experts and test centres, both from industry and academia. The approximate budget of the project is 70 M€.
