February 8, 2013
The bacterial enzyme nitrogenase is among the most heavily studied enzymes because of its agronomic importance. This enzyme is ultimately responsible for the natural fertilization of soil and crops that is essential to sustainable agricultural practices. The research project starting now at IMDEA Energía aims to exploit another capability of nitrogenase, that of hydrogen production for its massive use as universal energy vector. Hydrogen can be considered as an environmentally friendly fuel because its combustion produces only water, being free of CO2 emissions. Another advantage is that some algae simultaneously perform photosynthesis and nitrogenase activity, thus using solar energy to directly produce hydrogen.

[ Read More ]Towards a new generation of Solar Thermoelectric Plants: Dr. Manuel Romero Álvarez
February 8, 2013
The thermal use of concentrated solar energy is recording exceptional growth, with a multitude of commercial projects in Spain, USA and other countries such as Israel, China and India, being the great hope of complementing to the wind power in massive implementation objectives of renewable energy set for the years 2020 and 2050. In large measure this first generation of commercial projects has been based on technological developments and matured concepts after more than two decades of research, where Spain has played a crucial role. But the current generation of solar thermoelectric plants are still based on conservative technological schemes and devices that do not exploit the great potential of concentrated solar energy. Research and development in these technologies already being addressed in new designs and applications more efficient thermodynamic cycles and endothermic chemical processes at high temperatures through more modular schemes, with less environmental impact, high efficiency and storage solutions that improve their manageability and adaptation to demand curves.
