IMDEA Institutes at the Madrid es Ciencia Fair 2026: Is it really not science fiction?

February 27, 2026

Young and experienced scientists working for a better future

Many things that seemed impossible and unbelievable yesterday are now so commonplace in our lives that we think they have always been here. But that is not true. Connecting via video call in seconds with someone thousands of kilometres away; being able to search for information on millions of things and get millions of results in a few minutes; converting milk or vegetable waste into vaccines or regenerative creams; 3D printing fully customised prostheses or medical devices; purifying water without using energy and using waste to manufacture bioplastics; building nanodevices that detect and attack only diseased cells; using the same type of material to store energy, purify water or make drug administration more effective…

All this and billions of other things are possible thanks to science. Without it… the wheel would never have been invented! Can you imagine a world without wheels? We can’t. That’s why we can’t imagine a world without science either.

And so that you can learn just a little bit about what we owe to science, we encourage you to come to the Madrid es Ciencia Fair, organised by the Fundación para el Conocimiento madrimasd, which this year is being held at La Nave.

There you can see what scientists of all ages—and we really aren’t exaggerating—are doing to make what seems like science fiction today a reality tomorrow.

We would love for you to visit our stand to learn about the seven IMDEA Institutes and the experiments and workshops we are offering this year. What’s more, the IMDEA Institutes would also like to know you.

At Madrid es Ciencia, you can tell us which issues concern you most, which you think are most urgent, what you expect from research, what you think you can contribute to science… Write a sentence about it on the #experimentaIMDEA wall we have set up at our stand in La Nave. And if your sentence is among the most inspiring, you are sure to receive a reward.

Also, if you take part in the activities the seven IMDEA Institutes have prepared, we will stamp your IMDEA Passport. Collecting all seven stamps will also earn you a reward. But don’t forget any of the IMDEA Institutes! Remember that we are: IMDEA Water, Energy, Software, Nanoscience, Materials, Nutrition and Networks.

We look forward to seeing you from Thursday 19th to Saturday 21st March at the 15th Madrid es Ciencia Fair, at La Nave.
