The University of Alcalá and IMDEA Water inaugurated a laboratory for water analysis in Sandino (Cuba)

On the Station of Monitoring and Environmental Analysis located in Sandino’s municipality (Cuba) a modern laboratory of water analysis was inaugurated last November 15. It is the first one in the facilities of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) in the province of Pinar del Rio. There, the physicochemical and microbiological status of water in this region will be studied.

This laboratory is the final result of the project "Installation of the first laboratory attached to the National System of Protected Areas (SNAP) managed by the Center for Research and Environmental Services (ECOVIDA)" which was presented and approved as part of the aid scheme for the accomplishment of actions of solidary cooperation of the University of Alcala. The project was managed by the IMDEA Water Institute and the Center for Research and Environmental Services ECOVIDA, which belongs to CITMA.

IMDEA Water researchers formed the Cuban specialists in chemical and microbiological analysis techniques, sampling, interpretation of results and design of sampling and environmental monitoring campaigns.

Soon, the laboratory will offer services of water analysis to other institutions of the province of Pinar del Río.
