Science that helps the Planet (II) at The European Researchers’ Night in Madrid 2025 (MSCA and Citizens)

Almost a year ago, on Friday, 27 September 2024, in the auditorium of the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid, a group of researchers from the IMDEA Institutes were discussing how science helps the planet. They discussed science in general and science in particular, that is, the science they personally engage in when they go to their laboratories or sit in front of their computers.
The idea that was raised before that ‘chat among colleagues’ and that, once at the Residence, could be sensed behind each of their interventions, sought to answer the question of what we would do without science. Although some sceptics may disagree, the general opinion was that science is essential because it improves our lives in every way.
This year, on the same stage, on Friday 26 September, another group of researchers from the IMDEA Institutes will meet to delve deeper into the importance of science, although on this occasion, changing the question and asking the audience to answer it.
The question is: What would you ask science for if you could only make one wish? Or, so as not to be selfish, what if, like Aladdin’s lamp, you could ask for three?
Science that helps the Planet (II) – Make a wish to Science is the activity with which the IMDEA Institutes will participate in The European Researchers’ Night in Madrid 2025 (MSCA and Citizens).
Once again this year, the Fundación para el Conocimiento madrimasd is coordinating this initiative in Madrid, an action framed in the Horizon Europe, programme in which more than 350 cities from almost 30 countries in Europe and South America are taking part.
The seven IMDEA Institutes will address the importance of science for the present and future of the planet from seven different scientific areas, which are also the names of the seven centres that make up the IMDEA network: Water, Energy, Materials, Nanoscience, Networks, Nutrition and Software.
IMDEA researchers are not genies like the one in Aladdin’s lamp, but they are brilliant at their work, and they will show you that they are already working to make your wishes come true. What’s more, they have another advantage over the one who made Aladdin happy: they don’t sleep for centuries waiting for someone to wake them up and ask them for wishes.
