Creado por iniciativa de la Comunidad de Madrid, IMDEA-Nanociencia (Instituto Madrileño de Estudios Avanzados) tiene por misión favorecer la puesta en marcha de nuevos equipos de investigación integrados por grupos de excelencia de la Comunidad y científicos procedentes de otros puntos de la geografía nacional e internacional, capaces de enfrentarse a los nuevos desafíos de la Nanociencia, la Nanotecnología y el Diseño Molecular. El físico Emilio Méndez, Premio Príncipe de Asturias 1998 de Investigación Científica y Técnica, forma parte del Consejo Científico asesor de IMDEA-Nanociencia.
