11th Madrid is Science Fair 2020 – Building a sustainable future – With the IMDEA Institutes

February 28, 2020

EVENT POSTPONED

If you want to see healthy and sustainable food printed in 3D, or how water is purified without consuming energy, learn that a solar installation can convert CO2 into kerosene, find out how your Instagram filter or 5G-based networks work, or discover that you don’t have to destroy a material to test its resistance, come and see the researchers from the IMDEA Institutes at the 11th Madrid is Science Fair.

From Thursday 23 to Saturday 25 April, the IMDEA Institutes will participate in the Madrid is Science Fair, organized by the madri+d Knowledge Foundation in La Nave.

The activities will be many and varied, aimed at all types of audiences, and intimately related to the so-called ODS, the Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations. Researchers at the IMDEA Institutes are working on research projects directly related to 14 of the 17 established ODS. Covering such a wide range of objectives is possible because the IMDEA Institutes are specialized in seven different knowledge areas – Water, Food, Energy, Materials, Nanoscience, Networks and Software – and because their teams are truly interdisciplinary, working with physicists, chemists, physicians, engineers, pharmacists, mathematicians,…

IMDEA Nanoscience will present Small is Different. Do you want to be a nanoscientist for a day? With us you can be. Discover that when things get small, they behave differently and that Nanoscience is behind many phenomena and technology around us.

IMDEA Water, within its activity Wastewater Quality and Treatment, will organize several workshops in which it will showcase its research in the field of water quality and wastewater treatment and reuse through technologies such as decentralized wastewater treatment at no energy cost using electricity-producing microorganisms.

Software is almost everywhere is the title of the IMDEA Software workshops within the Madrid is Science Fair. As an example of what its researchers are doing to make all the software around us more reliable, safe, efficient and economical, IMDEA Software will be organising four workshops and a scape room which can only be surpassed if everyone collaborates.

IMDEA Food will organise Healthy, Sustainable, 3-D Nutrition of the Future, teaching the public that precision nutrition can improve and prevent chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease linked to unhealthy lifestyles; and that 3-D food printing can transform underused foods (e.g. fish) into new, visually appealing and nutritious products.

IMDEA Networks will present The Future is 5G. The activities to be prepared by IMDEA Networks could be subtitled Applied Technology for the 21st Century Society. With this, the Institute’s researchers aim to show the public what 5G and connectivity can bring to a more sustainable society, as well as providing advice on security and privacy on the web, notions of the so-called 4.0 industry, etc.

Energy R+D+i is the title that encompasses the workshops in which the public can participate and have a chat with IMDEA Energy researchers. Our world needs a lot of energy, the future of its sources and use will affect our lives and the environment. That is what we are researching into!

Discover the new materials, Be part of the future! is the title of the activities to be organised by IMDEA Materials researchers. They could also be entitled From the computer to the experimental as they will show the public that in researching new materials, a computer is as good as a microscope or a pipette. With them, the Institute’s researchers want to convey in a simple way how Materials Science and Engineering contribute to solving some of the challenges facing humanity today and to promoting sustainable development.
