Advances in medicine, materials, telecommunications, energy, and various other fields, have transformed everything around us. It is hard to envision a world without science making our lives easier.
Science’s work is far from over; it must continue to transform our lives to make them better, without forgetting to do so in a sustainable way. This is what IMDEA researchers will be discussing in Science that Helps the Planet.
Friday 27 September, at the auditorium of the Residencia de Estudiantes de Madrid, researchers from the IMDEA Institutes will talk about their professional and personal commitment to a more sustainable planet and how science helps to achieve it.
The European Researchers’ Night in Madrid 2024
The European Researchers’ Night in Madrid 2024, coordinated by the Fundación para el Conocimiento madrimasd, is an action framed in the Horizon Europe programme in which more than 400 cities from almost 30 countries in Europe and South America are taking part.
Science that helps the Planet – Science, what would we do without you?
Science helps the planet, which means it helps us all in countless ways. The IMDEA researchers you can meet at the Residencia de Estudiantes contribute to these millions of ways, for example, helping to understand the causes and consequences of changes in global biodiversity. Others are analysing the importance of caring for the gut microbiota (the set of microorganisms that live in our intestine) through diet and lifestyle to prevent the development of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes or cancer.
They also contribute to the understanding that without science our lives would be much worse, developing new devices for electrochemical energy storage and for more sustainable environmental applications, or designing multifunctional materials and structures through so-called ‘green engineering’.
And that is not all. Because their commitment to the planet is so strong, they also contribute to research on software, communication networks, privacy and digital security, combining the legal aspects of data and consumer protection with the more technical aspects of improving consumption, efficiency…
On such a large planet, the very small also has a special role to play. Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, which are also the specialities of many IMDEA researchers, are increasingly involved in things related to medicine, energy, new materials, among many other examples.
And all this is just a small part of what IMDEA researchers do to help the planet. You will be surprised by the projects they work on and also by their professional careers, no two are alike! Different training, different countries, different specialities… that have led them to a common goal: science. And also to the idea that ‘we must fight and raise awareness so that today’s utopias become a reality in the future’ [Narseo Vallina].
